The Mid-Canterbury Summer Singing School was started in 2000 by Singing Tutor Jo Castelow as a vehicle for the talented singers . It quickly grew to encompass students from Christchurch, Timaru and further a field. It has become an iconic course that hundreds of singers have now passed through and is a favourite on the musical calendar in Ashburton.
Singing
The Mid-Canterbury Summer Singing School is a musical theatre course that is divided into two sections junior and seniors. They come to The Ashburton Event Centre, (Mid-Canterbury’s state-of-the-art theatre) to rehearse and perform 2 concerts for the public at the end of the week. They sing and dance their way through five days of rehearsals.
Choreography
Moving into the future we are going to have a new choreographer each year from past summer school students. This is to acknowledge and support those who have been through the Mid-Canterbury Summer Singing School and are working in the industry. This year’s choreographer will be Sarah Hart-Bryant. A fun filled week for students aged 9-22. This course is for competent singers who love to sing and dance.
